Fostering FAQs
What is Fostering?
Fostering is bringing a cat or kitten into your home and taking care of them until they are formally adopted.
How long does fostering typically last?
It depends. A nursing mom and kittens - may be for a 2-3 months. Weaned kittens may be 1.5 - 3 months. Older cats many times take longer to place into adoptive homes but also are easier to care for. Given we are rescuing from cat communities, many times socialization is the thing that takes the longest. Fosters get a tremendous amount of joy from transforming untrusting kittens and cats
into an adoptable pet. JVC works with our foster volunteers to understand their commitment ability and time they can put aside for cat/kitten care.
Can I foster if I have pets?
Yes, many of our fosters have pets of their own, but you will need a dedicated space to keep your foster separate from your pets until they are ready to be introduced.
What are the costs?
We provide, food/litter and supplies if needed. All medical costs are paid for by JVC.
Are foster cats/kittens healthy?
Generally, yes. However, due to their time on the streets, sometimes they have upper respiratory infections or conjunctivitis. This is usually resolved easily with a 10-day course of antibiotics. JVC has a medical supervisor that will oversee any meds/sick animals and coach you on how to give medication. Any very sick animal normally resides with our medical supervisor until stable enough for a foster home.
How do adopters see the foster animal?
JVC promotes our available cats and kittens in a variety of ways. In person meetings are normally done at Petsmart or in our fosters home. We leave this to the discretion of the fostering individual and what we believe is in the animals best interest.
What support do I receive?
As a foster you will be part of a group of individuals that have a lot of fostering experience as well as our medical supervisor and president. We work to place fosters with a match that supports their needs and doesn't over burden the animal or foster parent

They allow us to rescue more cats & kittens by increasing our capacity to care for and transition cats and kittens to their forever homes. Patience, love, care, and time can transform a cat or kittens life.
